Marching Band Things to Know
At competitions, we cheer for all of the bands!
There are two parts to marching band competitions:
“PRELIMS”
All bands compete in their school category (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A or 5A). AAHS is 4A.
After all bands have competed at Prelims, there is a Drum Major retreat, where all the drum majors line up and placement is announced. The Drum Majors perform an intricate salute upon receiving their placement award. The stadium is usually cleared for a short break before the final round.
“FINALS“
The finalist bands compete in reverse order of the Prelim rankings — lowest score to highest (first-place). AAHS is usually one of the last bands to perform.
After all the bands have performed, they will either have a full retreat (each band comes out to the field) or a Drum Major only retreat. Final placements are then announced – lowest score to highest. Caption awards are also announced (categories are usually for best music, best visuals, and best general effect).
At the end of the competition, students return to AAHS and will help to unload and put away equipment, and clean the buses.
Most competitions in Colorado follow the rules established by the Colorado Bandmasters Association.

Social Media and Photos
PLEASE DO NOT POST ANY VIDEO OF THE BAND ON THE INTERNET UNTIL AFTER OUR FIRST COMPETITION, THANKS!
Photos and videos of students take place during practices and competitions. We follow guidelines as directed by ASD20.
We cannot stop photographs from being taken; band is a public performance event. Here’s a helpful link explaining the legalities of public photography :http://www.krages.com/phoright.htm
All photos and videos must be taken in public locations (places where there is no expectation of privacy) and must meet school, social media, and legal best-practice guidelines. Any photos shared with our program will be reviewed with these in mind. If you have photos you’d like to share, you’re encouraged to use the band SMUGMUG account, where high-res photos are available to share.
